Creating and Selling an Online Course Teaching a Skill You’re Good At

Turn What You Know Into Passive Income: How I Built My First Online Course

You don’t need a degree or big following to teach something online. I created a simple course about using Canva for beginners—and people actually paid for it. Here’s how I did it.

What Makes a Sellable Course Topic

You don’t have to be an expert. Just ask:

  • What do people often ask you to explain?
  • Can it solve a small problem in 1–2 hours?
  • Are others charging for the same thing?

Some ideas include:

  • How to use Excel
  • How to edit videos on CapCut
  • How to speak conversational English

How I Created My First Course

  1. Wrote an outline in Google Docs
  2. Recorded short videos using my phone + laptop mic
  3. Uploaded to Gumroad and made a simple landing page

Pricing and Promotion

  • Priced the course at Rp75k
  • Shared in local freelance/creative groups
  • Offered bonuses like templates or guides

Tools That Help

  • Loom for screen recording
  • Canva for cover design
  • WhatsApp or Instagram for selling directly

Final Thoughts

Once the course is made, it sells again and again. It’s one of the most passive ways I’ve made money so far.
