I’ve Downloaded a Ton of Apps — These Are the Ones That Stuck

Between anxiety, overthinking, and the stress of modern life, mental health matters. I’ve tried dozens of apps, but only a few made a real difference. Here’s what I actually use — regularly and for free.
1. Daylio – Mood & Habit Tracker
Two taps. That’s all it takes to log my mood and activities in Daylio. No typing, no journaling — just a quick check-in.
Why it works: After a few weeks, I started noticing patterns. Days when I exercised? My mood improved. Days I skipped meals? Not so great. It helped me connect the dots between what I do and how I feel — without needing a deep-dive analysis.
2. Insight Timer – Guided Meditations & Sleep
If you’ve ever wanted free access to thousands of meditations, calming soundtracks, and even sleep stories — this is your app.
Why I love it: I use Insight Timer before bed when anxiety makes my brain feel noisy. It also has short meditations (under 5 minutes) that I sneak in during lunch breaks. Bonus: no pressure to buy anything.
3. Sanvello – CBT Tools for Everyday Stress
Think of Sanvello as a pocket therapist — minus the appointment. Based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), it has tools to reframe negative thoughts, track stress, and calm your body.
My favorite feature? The “Thought Record.” When my inner critic gets loud, this tool helps me slow down and challenge those spiraling thoughts.
4. Shine – Daily Affirmations & Audio Boosts
Some affirmations feel cheesy. Not Shine. It delivers daily audio boosts and affirmations that are short, real, and surprisingly comforting.
When I’m low on motivation or overwhelmed, I pop in earbuds and listen to Shine’s daily boost. It’s like a pep talk from someone who gets it.
5. MyNoise – Ambient Noise to Focus or Relax
Whether I need to focus or unwind, MyNoise has background sounds that match the mood. My go-tos: “Rain on a Tent,” “White Noise,” and “Calm Office.”
I use it when I’m working from home, journaling, or trying to fall asleep. Unlike YouTube loops, there are no annoying ads or jarring transitions — just smooth, calming soundscapes.
Why These Work for Me
These apps aren’t overloaded with pop-ups or trying to upsell me on every click. They’re simple, intuitive, and actually helpful. They fit into my routine without demanding much — and that’s exactly why they’ve stuck.
Mental health support doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes, it just takes the right tools — and a little intention — to breathe easier and feel more in control.
